Arrow Right Wednesday Evening Hikes always depart from Owen Sound City Hall parking lot (see OSCHPL above) at 7:00 pm. Hikes may be cancelled in poor weather. Everyone welcome! This applies to non–winter schedules unless stated otherwise.

Listed below are outdoor activities that may interest newcomers. Further hikes may be listed in the Sydenham Hiker newsletter, which you will receive when you join the Bruce Trail Conservancy and affiliate with the Sydenham Club (how to join). Dress appropriately for the weather, length of the event, bring water, etc. No dogs on organized hikes unless stated otherwise. No smoking on organized hikes. Hike Rating System

To help hikers decide what hike is suitable for them, hike leaders use the hike rating system when planning their hikes. Hikes are rated as follows. This listing is a combination of what Sydenham Club has used in the past and criteria used by other Bruce Trail clubs.

Tuxedo Blaze: trail straight ahead

Pace and Distance

Arrow Right Leisurely = 3 km/h and less than 12 km
Arrow Right Moderate = 4 km/h and between 12 and 20 km
Arrow Right Fast = 5+ km/h or over 20 km

Terrain (Level of Difficulty)

Arrow Right Easy = Mainly flat. Could have gentle inclines. Primarily good footing on well defined trails or roads. Terrain easily managed. Hiking boots not required, but trails may be wet.

Arrow Right Moderate = Treadway may be uneven and/or rocky. Some steeper ascents and descents are possible. Terrain will be variable. Hiking boots are recommended.

Arrow Right Strenuous = Treadway will be uneven and/or rocky. Steep ascents and descents likely. Terrain will be difficult. You must be physically fit and hiking boots are recommended.

Distance

  • Distances are stated in kilometres (km). [1 kilometre = 0.621371192 mile].

Looping Through Sydenham 25 Badge

 

The special badge can be earned by hiking all 25 loop hikes in the “Looping Through Sydenham” book. To begin your challenge, simply copy the Table of Contents to use as your hiking log. Complete each hike in any order you choose, and note the date on your log. On maps showing more than one loop, just pick your favourite.

The challenge runs from 2014 to 2019; only hikes after March 15, 2014 count. When you complete all 25 hikes, send your log, and a cheque for $5 (payable to Sydenham Bruce Trail Club - no cash please), your name, and a stamped, self-addressed envelope to:
