Discover the Sydenham Bruce Trail Club

Listed below are a few public outdoor activities that may interest newcomers. Longer hikes, etc. are listed in the Sydenham Hiker newsletter, which you will receive when you join the Bruce Trail Conservancy and affiliate with our local Sydenham Club (how to join). Dress appropriately for the weather and length of the event, bring water, etc. Please, no dogs and no smoking on organized hikes. All persons participate at their own risk.

Hike Rating System

To help hikers decide what hike is suitable for them, hike leaders use the hike rating system when planning their hikes. Hikes are rated as follows. This listing is a combination of what SBTC has used in the past and criteria used by Hike Ontario.

  • Pace (or Speed)
    • Leisurely = less than 2 km/h
    • Slow = 2 to 3 km/h
    • Moderate = 3 to 4 km/h
    • Fast = 5 km/h or greater
  • Level of Difficulty (LOD)/Terrain
    • Easy or Level 1 – Well–defined trails, gentle inclines. Hiking boots not required, but trails may be wet. Is suitable for beginners. This level is recommended for newcomers to club activities.
    • Normal or Level 2 – Generally on trail. May be hilly, light bushwhacking, some rough spots or obstacles. Boots are recommended.
    • Strenuous or Level 3 – Rough terrain with one or more of the following: extensive bushwhacking, steep sections, long climbs and descents, beaver dams, rock scrambling or other obstacles. Boots, Level 2 experience, and a high level of fitness essential. Long pants and sleeves recommended.
  • Distance
    • Distance is stated in kilometres (km). For the "unconverted" >> 1 kilometre = 0.621371192 miles. Online distance converter.
